Reefer's (formerly Calico Jack's), December 1, 2006
Have you ever had one of those days where something catches you completely by surprise and you don't quite know what to make of it? Well, that's what we felt like on November 30th when JW called Calico Jack's to confirm our booking on December 1st. We had made the booking months in advance and thought nothing of it. When JW called, he found out that CJ's was no more and the club was now called Reefer's. Now, this may not seem like such a big deal, but CJ's had been there for years - a Jacksonville landmark, at least on the Southside bar scene. Now, new owners, a new name, who knew what to expect? They didn't even know who was coming in that Friday, just that they probably had a band booked. When we showed up, the owners were gracious but had no idea what we sounded like, what kind of music we played and certainly didn't know that Mr. Blues was coming to town. They are making some welcome renovations to the club and, while the place is in a bit of disarray right now with construction going on, will still be a great place for a brew and some oysters.
